Define Special Education in Legal Terms
This is defined as free specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of the student that has a disability. This includes but is not limited to instruction in the classroom, at home, in a hospital, and in an institution. This also includes physical education
What does LRE stand for and what does it mean in Special Education
LRE means least restrictive environment
Students will be spending that maximum amount of time in the general education classroom as they can. they want to be taught with other students that are their age and they also do better when the instructional and learning material meets their needs.
What does FAPE stand for and what does it mean for Special education
FAPE stands for Free and Appropriate Public Education
This means that the students that qualify for special education services will have access to them in a public school setting at no cost to the family.
What is Continuum of Services
This is a range or educational placements from least restrictive to most restrictive environment for a student that is receiving special education services

Why is a multidisciplinary team required when a student is being evaluated for special education services
These professionals must come from a variety of disciplines to be involved and this is so that they student receives the most unbiased and equal opportunity that there is.
What does IDEA stand for
Individuals with Disabilities Educational Improvement Act
What is IDEIA
This is Federal Law that provides FAPE to students that are receiving or identified for special education services ages 3-21
What does it mean fora student receiving special education services to have access to the general education curriculum?
This means that any student that is receiving special education services must also have access to the the same learning materials that peers of their same age also have access to
What are Transition Services?
These are appropriate measurable goals that re based from the transition assessments ans are related to the training, education, employment, and when appropriate independent living skills. This will also include courses that may be taken to assist reaching these goals.
What is the purpose of them?
This is to make the transition to secondary or post-secondary education setting as smooth as possible and being able to function as successfully as possible.
When do they Begin?
They must begin no later than the first IEP meeting so that they can be in effect when the child turns 16 and they get updates yearly after that.
How often must and IEP team meet?
Once a year (annually) by law

What is an IEP
This is a federal legal document that develops an individual plan for each student that is receiving special education services. This provides the students current level of academic performance. This includes goals, objectives, accommodations, and adaptations, support services, assistive technology, transportation services and testing arrangements that are specific to the needs of each child. This will also outline the placement and location of the services and where the services will be carried out.
What is meant by full inclusion
This means that any student receiving special education services is being taught fully 100% in a general education classroom setting
