- delay in phonological acquisition
- vocalize less than same age peers
- difficulty learning the speech sound system, may ot be able to repeat words
- limited phonological awareness (rhyming, syllable segmentation, segmenting phonemes, recognizing. first and last soudn in a word, substituting phonemes, manipulating phonemes in a word–these all help with acquiring reading)

- few speech production errors (adding correct word ending)
- may have deficits in phonological awareness, speech perception, and phonological memory
(also skills that really influence reading)
