Right Hemisphere Brain Damage
Refers to a group of deficits that result from injury to the right hemisphere of the brain.
Characteristics secondary to RHD/ Cognitive impairments
Visuospatial neglect, attention, memory, exectutive functions
Visuospatial Neglect
Form of visual attention that involves directive attention to a location in space
Attention
Impairments include joint attention, sustained attention, divided attention, alternating attention, selective attention
Memory
Impairments include short term, long term, immediate, delayed, working, procedural
Executive Functioning
Involves the initiation, organization, and integration of information related to planning, problem-solving, and reasoning
What is retrospective memory?
Remembering people, words, and events encountered in the past. EX: knowing facts, past experiences, phone numbers
What is incidental memory?
Memories acquired without intention EX:

Memory involving on planned actions or recall for the future. EX: Turning off stove after cooking, Taking medications
Characteristics of RHD
Neglect of all information from the left side, unrealistic denial of illness or limb involvement, impaired judgment and self-monitoring (Safety issue), lack of motivation, and inattention
Communication characteristics of RHD
- Nonlinguistic- nonverbal communication that conveys intent, like facial expression, body language can be affected
- Paralinguistic- Changes in prosody or intonation, pitch and volume
- Linguistic- using verbalization, such as words, phrases, or sentences
