Ex.5: Observing Cyanobacteria Flashcards
What are the three types of photosynthetic bacteria?
purple, green and cyanobacteria
Where do you find cyanobacteria?
abundant in soil, fresh water, and salt water
What is the main difference between cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic bacteria?
cyanobacteria have plant-like photosynthesis
What is oxygenic photosynthetic? Used by cyanobacteria
when water is used an an electron donor and oxygen is a waste product
What is anoxygenic photosynthetic? Used by purple and green bacteria
other molecules are used a source of electrons and oxygen not produced as waste product
What is another difference between cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic bacteria?
cyanobacteria have chlorophyll a
Why can cyanobacteria gow in acid hot springs?
have very simple nutritional requirements, can use carbon dioxide as a carbon source
What are heterocysts?
nitrogen-fixing cells with thick walls and specializations allowing cells to remain anaerobic protecting nitrogenase enzyme (very oxygen sensitive)
What is Anabaena?
filamentous species with hetrocysts
What can cyanobacteria do with atmospheric nitrogen?
fix, incorporate into cellular material, atmospheric nitrogen
What is Oscillatoria?
filamentous species with gliding motility
What us the maximum magnification of wet mount slides? Why?
400x, because we can not use oil, otherwise cover slip and fluid moves
What is Brownian movement?
motion caused by particle suspended in a liquid colliding with the molecules of the surrounding medium
What is true motility?
directed movement, organism will proceed in one direction for a considerable distance, may spin or roll
What is bio-detritus?
fragments of disintegrating, decomposing, once-living material
