ex 1. perio anatomy. pathogens. immunology Flashcards
name the 4 parts that make up the periodontium
the periodontium is made up of 4 parts that surround the tooth – they are the attchment apparatus:
- gingiva
- alveolar bone
- periodontal ligament (PDL)
- root cementum
when does the periodontium develop?
the periodontium develops early in embryo development– along the same time as tooth development
t/f the cells of the periodontium originate in the NEURAL CREST, migrate to the SECOND BRANCHIAL arch, and beocome ectodermal cells
Mostly false. the cells of the perodontium orignainte in the NEURAL CREST, migrate to the FIRST BRANCHIAL arch (aka 1st pharyngeal arch- frms the max and mandiblular arches), and become ECTOMESENCHYMAL cells that lie beneath the stomadeal epithelium
what does the dental papilla become?
the dental papilla becomes the dentn and the pulp of a tooth0 it is ectomesenchymal in origin
what does the dental follicle become and what is its origin?
the dental follicle becomes the periodontium- the periodontal ligament, the alveolar bone, the cementum, and gingiva – these are etomesenchymal in origin
what is amelogenin?
amelogenin is a protein secreteed by the Hertwig’s epithelial rooth sheath that indiuces dental follicle cells to become cementoblasts(that form cementum)
when do ectomesenchymal cells vanish?
ectomesenchymal cells persist in the oral cavity for life and aid in cell turnover
what type of cell forms the alveolar bone?
osteoblasts form the alveolar bone
what do odontoblasts form>?
odontoblasts form dentin
T/F free gingiva is NOT keratinzed
FALSE> free gingiva IS keratinized
in a helathy adult, where is the free gingival margin located?
in a helahy adult, the free gingival margin \is located about 1.5-2 mm coronal to the CEJ
T/F the junctional epithelium is connected diretly to cementum
true. the junctional epithelium IS conneted firectly to the cementum
where is the free ginigval groove located?
the free gingival groove i located bt free gingiva and attached gingiva. in a helathy mouth, attached gingiva starts at the CEJ
