Ex 1 History Flashcards
Why should we be interested in histopathology?
Need to know what normal and abnormal tissues look like.
Some diseases are identifiable only by histology slides
Four types of tissues?
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Types of epithelial tissues and example
simple columnar- ileum
simple cuboidal- kidney
stratified squamos- skin
transitional- ureter
Types of connective tissue and example
dense bone
cancellous bone (spongy)
adipose
hyaline cartilage
Types of muscle tissue
skeletal, cardiac, smooth
examples of nervous tissue
cerebral cortex tissue
Purkinje cell from cortex of cerebellum
ducts of glands
epithelial
skin
epithelial and connective
lining of blood and lymphatic vessels
epithelial
fat
connective tissue
red and white blood cells
connective
cartilage
connective
kidney tubules
epithelial
tendons and ligaments
connective
Who were the two histologists who won the 1906 Noble Prize and what did they receive the prize for?
Golgi- invented silver staining technique used to visualize neural structure of brain
Cajal- correct interpretation of neural structure of brain based on Golgi’s work
Bichat
Brought pathology to tissue level
21 types of tissue, but no microscope
Organic vs animal life
What organs were organic life?
heart, intestines, and other organs
What were animal life?
symmetrical organs: eyes, ears, limbs
habit and memory, ruled by wit and intellect
Virchow
Brought disease to cell level through application of cell theory
What is histopathology?
Study of diseased tissues
Who introduced the notion that diseases attacked tissues rather than whole organs or the entire body?
Marie Francois Xavier Bichat
