EW Terminology Flashcards
What is Electronic Warfare?
EW encompasses any military action which involves the use of the EM spectrum
What is EW divided into?
Electronic attack
Electronic protection
Electronic support
Draw the diagram comprising of EA, ES and EP
EA —— jamming, deception, neutralisation
EP—— EMCON, Masking, Hardening, wartime reserve modes
ES —- SIGINT (COMINT/ELINT) Threat warning (RWR, LWR, MWs)
What is Electronic Support?
Search for, intercept, identify and locate sources of intentional or unintentional radiated EM energy for the purpose of immediate threat recognition, targeting and planning of future operations
What is Electronic Attack?
Use of directed EM energy to attack personal, facilities or equipment with the intent of degrading, neutralizing or destroying enemy combat capability. Includes actions to prevent or reduce enemy’s effective use of EM spectrum
What is Jamming?
Deliberate radiation, re radiation or reflection of EM energy to impare effectiveness of electronic devices being used by the enemy
What is Deception?
The deliberate radiation, re radiation, reflection or alteration of EM energy to confuse or distract an enemy or it’s Electronic systems
What is neutralisation
Deliberate use of EM energy to either temporarily or permanently damage enemy devises which rely on the EM spectrum
What is Electronic protection?
Involves all actions taken to protect personal, facilities and equipment from any effects of enemy or friendly use of the EM spectrum which would degrade or destroy friendly combat capability
What is the EM spectrum from left to right?
Low frequency/high WL
Radio Micro IR Visible spectrum UV X ray Gamma Cosmic
What do the military use EM spectrum for?
Radar
Radios
