Evolution Part 1 Flashcards
evolution
the theory that life changes into different life over time
Variation
different traits within a species
Adaption
the desirable traits survive from generation to generation causing a species to be adapted to it’s new environment.
Fitness
the ability to survive based on traits
Vestigial structure
unused bodily structures that diminish in size over time
Analogous structure
similar structures in different species that do the same thing but have evolved in different species
Homologous structure
same organ or bone that appears in different species
Convergent evolution
when two species that don’t have a common ancestor have similar traits
Divergent evolution
when two species have a common ancestor
Speciation
the formation of new species in the course of evolution
Coevolution
the influence closely associated species have on one another
punctuated equilibrium
the hypothesis that evolutionary development is marked by rapid, isolated episodes of speciation between long periods of little/no change
Gradualism
the hypothesis that evolution occurs with gradual changes over time
