ecology Flashcards
Ecology
a branch of biology that deals with organisms and how they relate to each other as well as their physical suroundings.
photosynthesis
a process that plants can do that makes glucose sugars and oxygen
abiotic
not derived from living organisms (physical rather than biological), no living
biotic
relating to living organisms
primary consumer
an organism that gets its energy directly from producers
secondary consumer
a living organism that gets most/all of it’s energy from pimary consumers
tertiary consumer
a life form that gets its energy mainly/only from secondary consumer
producer
life form that gets it’s energy directly from the sun
biome
a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g., forest or tundra.
biosphere
regions of the surface of the planet
ecosystem
biological community of different organisms that interact with each other
biomass
the full mass of biological matter on the planet or region of the planet
10% rule
in most cases 10% of energy is lost between trophic levels
community
group of different species potentialy or already interacting with each other that are living in the same place
trophic level
a level of biomass on an trophic/energy pyramid
