Evolution of the atmospher Flashcards
what was water vapour and nitrogen produced through
volcanic eruptions
why have levels of co2 decreased
- locked up in sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels
- absorbed by plants during photosynthesis
- dissolved in oceans
how to reduce emissions of co2
stop burning fossil fuels as the carbon fuels are released as co2
how to reduce emissions of methane
recycle as landfill sites release methane from decomposition
how did levels of o2 rise
more plants evolved therefore, during photosynthesis, oxygen was released as a by product.
carbon dioxide+water–>oxygen+glucose
list the three greenhouse gases
carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour
effects of sulphur dioxide on atmosphere
causes sulphuric acid rain which can kill plants and damage buildings and statues-makes metal corrode. cause respiratory problems if breathed in.
Describe the greenhouse effect.
- energy from the sun travels to the earth as SHORT WAVELENGTH RADIATION.
- some short wavelength radiation reflects back into space, this is because short wavelength radiation doesn’t react strongly with the gas molecules.
- the energy of the radiation is absorbed when it reaches the earths surface.
- the surface of the earth radiates the energy as long wavelength radiation.
- energy in the long wavelength radiation is absorbed by the greenhouse gases.
- temp of atmosphere rises.
effects of nitrogen oxide on atmosphere
caused nitric acid rain that damages plants, it is also dangerous if breathed in/
effects of carbon particulates
get stuck in lungs cause damage. reflect sunlight back into space which cause global dimming.
