Evolution by Natural Selection Flashcards
Selection Pressures
External Force/Factor that influences the survival + reproductive success of individuals in a population. EX: disease, climate, natural disasters
Differential Reproduction
Some individuals pass genes to the next generation and other individuals do not
Darwin Concept
- Modification of species over time
- challenged “fixed natural hierarchy”
Variation
All the differences
that exist between individuals in a population
Inheritance
Parents that successfully meet the challenges of
the environment will pass the genes that built those
advantageous traits on to their offspring.
Nature Selecting
The process by which individuals with traits that give them a survival or reproductive advantage are more likely to survive and pass on those traits to the next generation.
Adaptation
The result of natural selecting – over time, traits that have evolved in a species because they help individuals survive or reproduce better in their environment
