Adaptations Flashcards
Optimality
crafting organisms that can meet the challenges of the environment
as efficiently or economically as possible
Mutations
Random changes in the A’s, C’s, and T’s, and G’s, that makeup DNA
Evolutionary Mismatch
When adaptations are “out-of-date” because the environment has
changed quickly, these traits are now maladaptive because they are
disadvantageous in the present environment.
Byproduct
Traits or characteristics that don’t solve adaptive problems, don’t
have functional design, and don’t lead to reproductive success
Divergence
Related species evolve different traits.
Convergence
Unrelated species evolve similar traits
Reverse engineering
Looking at all features of a trait in
order to deduce its function and to figure out what it has evolved to
do
Comparative method
Involves comparing the traits of
different species to figure out what each has evolved to do
Obligate Adaptations
fixed trait, doesn’t change with the environmen
Facultative Adaptations
flexible trait, changes depending on the environment.
