Evolution and More Flashcards
Galapagos island finches
The Various different finches who with noticeable differences evolved apart from each other.
Charles Darwin
The man who did research on the Galapagos island finches
Founders Arrive
Finches arrived to the Galapagos and started reproducing
Geographic Isolation
Some finches moved to other islands
Changes in the gene pool occur
The separated finches change genes and mutate to survive better in their new environment
Reproductive isolation occurs
Finches from different islands are so different now that they wont breed and reproduce
Continued evolution produces more species
More and more diversity, species are designed to live in their environment
Mutations
A change in the DNA sequence of an organism.
Genetic Recombination
Exchange in the genetic material between different organisms. Results in offspring with random combinations of genes from the parents.
Lateral Gene transfer
Movement of genetic info across normal mating Barrie’s, between more or less distantly related organisms.
Single gene traits.
Affected by 1 gene, inheritance is by one gene.
Polygenic traits
Affected by more than one gene, Multiple phenotypes
Homologous Structures
Two structures inherited from a distant relative but not having the same function
Analogous Structures
Two structures with the same function but no distant relative.
Vestigial organs
Inherited organs from ancestors that have lost most of their original size and function due no not being needed but not being harmful.
