Why did horses evolve?
Due to changes in: • Environment • Terrain • Climate • Vegetation • And evolution of predators

3500 to 4000 BC
Where was the domestication of the horse?
Ukraine, Kazakhstan
Why did they domesticate the horse?
Meat, Milk, Hide, then pack and draught animals
Benefits of horse domestication?
Food, Shelter, Veterinary care, protection = increased chance of survival.
Drawbacks of horse domestication?
Restricted movement and social interaction.
Limited breeding opportunities.
Expenditure of energy to benefit another species.
These all result in conflict with evolutionary processes.
Approximately how many breeds of horse are there worldwide?
~1400
What is the scientific definition of “Breed”?
There is no scientifically accepted definition.
Why did breeds develop?
Due to the necessity to develop certain characteristics in order to perform a particular type of work.
What is closed registry?
Both parents need to be registered.
What is partially closed registry?
At least one parent registered.
What is open registry?
Accepts horses that conform to a certain criteria.
E.g. Colour or studbook selection.
(Regardless of parents status.)
