Evolution 2 Flashcards
What is a species?
members interbreed
shared gene pool
reproductive isolated from other species
produce fertile offspring
Adaptions?
-anything that helps you to survive and reproduce
Biogeography?
islands with similar hapitats don’t always have the same species
Fossil Record? Transitional Form
ancient whales had hond limbs but were aquatic
comparative anatomy?
-similarity in form suggests a common ancestry
-environment acts on the organism to make different structure
Homologous?
same structure, different functions
Analogous
same functions, different structure
What acts on an organism to make a different structure?
Environment and mutations; NOT COMMON ANCESTRY
Sexual selection?
differential reproduction, as a result of variation in the ability to obtain mates
Sexual dimorphism?
males and females of the same species have a different environment
Convergent evolution?
very different organisms evolving in the same environment; Creates analogous traits
Coevolution?
2 organisms evolve together
Weakness’s of Darwins theory?
-couldnt describe how variation occured, but knew it happened
- couldn’t explain meiosis, mutations, etc.
-because DNA hadn’t been discovered yet
