Evolution Flashcards
What does natural selection lead to
Evolution
What evidence is there for the theory of evolution
Fossils DNA molecular evidence
Fossils
Imprints or remains of dead animals and plants in rocks from a long time ago
Fossil records provides evidence of how species have changed over time and how species have evolved
DNA bas sequence- evidence for evolution
Comparing them of common genes or other molecular evidence (RNA or amino acid sequence) examine how closely related different species are.
Enabled scientists to estimate the point in history when two species shared a common ancestor.
Cythochrome C - found in mitochondria
Large number of species have- often the protein or gene that is compared.
What can adaptations be classified as
Anatomical internal or external physical features
psychological processes that take place within an organism
behavioural
What is convergent evolution
When different species are exposed to similar selection pressures eg environmental
Then they will undergo natural selection for similar alleles and there fore become more genetically similar
Interspecific variation
Difference between members of different species
Intraspecific variation
Difference between members of the same species
Environmental factors
Can also cause variation - greater impact on plants- cannot move therefore always exposed to environmental conditions
Continuous variation
Traits that are controlled by many genes and the environment can have an impact on
Represented on a histogram
Discontinuous variation
Traits that are controlled by a single gene and the environment has no impact
Represented by bar charts
What does natural selection do
Results in species becoming better adapted to their environment
Natural selection long answer
- random mutation occurs
- genetic variation
- mutation provide advantage to survive in their environment - selection pressure
- new allele provides reproductive selective advantage- more likely to reproduce - reproductive success
-over generations = increase frequency of this allele - change in the allele frequency
