Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is evolution?
A
Change in the genome/genetic sequence of a species over time
2
Q
What are the 3 main processes of evolution?
A
- Variation within a species (no one is an identical clone to another person)
- Reproduction (the rate at which a species reproduces determines how fast it evolves)
- Selection (those best suited to their environment with be more successful as passing on genes)

4
Q
Evolution by natural selection?
A
Charles Darwin- those best suited to their environment, more successful at passing their traits onto the next generation
5
Q
Examples of constant environmental challenges?
A
- weather
- famine
- competition
6
Q
Battesian Mimicry
A
A harmless species resembles harmful species
7
Q
Mallerian species
A
Two harmful species look similar
8
Q
What is a mutation?
A
Permanent change for genetic material. It provides new alleles and a source of new genetic variation when inherited. Most are benign/harmful.
