Evolution Flashcards
Define evolution
It is any genetic change in a population that is inherited over time over several generations
What drives evolution?
Natural selction
Define extinction
The irreversible condition of a species which has no living representative. All organisms belonging to that species die and this reduces biodiversity.
NATURAL SELECTION CAN LEAD TO EXTINCTION
Explain in brief what the natural selection theory proposes
“survival of the fittest)
This theory proposes that the best adapted organisms to their environment are most likely going to be the ones to survive, whilst the least adapted nature will eliminate them
What does the natural selection theory state about the variation of organisms?
It states that individuals in a population are naturally variable which means that they are all different in some ways, this means that there are specific organisms which have traits which make them better suited to the environment than others.
Why do individuals with adaptive traits have an advantage over others?
Because they contain traits which give them some advanatges over others .Therefore, these adaptive traits will allow these organisms to survive and reproduce. Then these individuals will pass these adaptie traits to their offspring from generation to genration . Over time these advantages traits will become more common to the population. Therefore through natural selection, these favourable traits will be passed on
What can natural selection lead to?
Speciation
Where one species can give rise to a new and distinctly different species. Speciation helps to drive evolution
