Evolution Flashcards
Charles Darwin
Creator of the theory of evolution
James Hutton
Introduced deep space
Natural Selection
Traits more suited to the environment are passed down to the next generation as the parents can survive and reproduce
Evidence of evolution
Fossil records, homologous body structures, early embryonic development (many vertebrae look similar), genetics and molecular biology (similar genetic code), Biogeography (where organisms lived in the past vs now).
Homologous Structures
Basic structures appear in different but related organisms with different purposes
Analogous Structures
Body structures serve similar purposes, but don’t share structure
Vestigial Organs
Inherited organs that have lost their function and size
Convergent Evolution
Species living on different continents with different ancestors living under similar conditions look similar
Divergent Evolution
2 or more related species become more dissimliar, can result in new species
Three types of reproductive isolation
behavioral, geographical, and temporal
Species
When two populations won’t mate and produce fertile offspring
Gene pool
Members of a population interbreed and share a gene pool
Sources of genetic varitation
mutation, genetic recombination, lateral gene transfer
Phylogeny
The study of evolutionary history of lineages or organisms
Clade
Group of species that includes a single common ancestry and descendants.
