evolution Flashcards
evolution
the process by which the characteristics of populations change over time. It also gives rise to new species.
artificial selection
humans interfere in traits in plants and animals and the steps taken to enhance and perpetuate these traits in future generations
natural selection
individuals w/ certain heritable traits survive and reproduce at a higher rate than others
conditions of natural selection
mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, natural selection?
how might resistance to a chemical/drug develop?
elements such as transposing can transfer from a plasmid to other plasmids or from a DNA chromosome to plasmid and vice versa that cause the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria
what do different beaks tell us about different species?
certain beak shapes/sizes on certain islands give a survival advantage.
hardy-weinburg
the presence of genetic variation does not guarantee evolution of a population
hardy-weinburg conditions
- mutations
- gene flow
- random mating
- natural selection
- large population size
founder efffect
a few individuals from a population start a new population w/ a different allele frequency than a original population. random, non adaptive
bottleneck effect
- suddenly change in environment
- drastic reduction in population size
- survivors gene pool does not reflect the original population variation
- random and non adaptive
anoles as convergent evolution
- case of where different living things independently acquire the same adaptations to the same challenges
- short legged, long legged, dewlap colors?
- females might not mate w/ different color dewlap males
