AP Bio Test Flashcards
Define selective permeability
Movement of a molecule through a membrane depends on the interaction of the molecule with the hydrophobic interior of the membrane
Structure + function of carrier proteins?
Define diffusion
-movement of molecules of any substance to spread out in the available space
-result of the thermal energy of molecules
-random movements
-population of molecules may be directional
Define osmosis
Diffusion of free water across a selectively permeable membrane
Hypertonic
A solution when surrounding a cell, will cause cell to lose water
Hypotonic
A solution when surrounding a cell, will cause cell to take up water
Isotonic
A solution when surrounding a cell, causes no net movement of water in or out of cell
Osmoregulation
Regulation of solute concentrations and water balance by a cell or organism (control of water balance)
Phagocytosis
Type of endocytosis in which large particulate substances or small organisms are taken up by a cell
Pinocystosis
Type of endocytosis in which the cell ingests extracellular fluid and its dissolved solutes
Receptor-mediated Exosytosis
The movement of specific molecules into a cell by the infolding of vesicles containing proteins with receptor sites specific to the molecules being taken in ; enables a cell to acquire bulk quantities of specific substances
Active Cell Transport Process
-requires cell to expend energy to move molecules against their concentration gradient
-tends to use carrier proteins rather than channel
-enables a cell to maintain internal concentration of molecules that would otherwise diffuse across a membrane
-ATP supplies the energy for most active transport
