Evolution Flashcards
Jean baptiste Lamarck
Inheritance of acquired characteristics
Five components of darwinism
Natural selection, perpetual change, Gradualism, common descent, multiplication of species
Natural selection
If the environment changes natural selection can select for ew traits which are favoured in the new environment.
Homology
Similarity due to sharing common ancestor
Evidences for evolution
Biogeography, fossil record, homology, direct observation
Vestigial structure
Remnants of features that served a purpose In organism’s ancestor
Can natural selection increase or decrease heritable traits that exist in a population?
Yes
homologous structure
Are anatomical variations in structure present in common ancestor
Evolutionary/phylogenies
Are hypothesis among the relationship between groups.
Analogous traits
Arise when groups independently adapt to similar environmental pressures in similar ways.
Misconceptions of evolution
I) evolution is not goal oriented and there is no end point
Misconception of evolution 2
It is like tinkering, slight modification of existing traits
Misconceptions of evolution 3
Traits musts already exist in a population to be selected for
Inclusive fitness
Sum of individuals fitness plus close family members (genes individuals pass to their offsprings plus genes close family members pass to their offspring)
Analogy
Similarity due to convergent evolution
