Evidence of natural selection Flashcards
What is the definition of natural selection
explains how environments applies a selective force on reproduction of individuals in a population
Who created the natural selection mechanism
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin was on a 5 year trip, where did he specifically visit
The Galapagos Islands
What did Darwin notice on his trip and what did he conclude with
He saw the Finches (bird) on the Galapagos islands where similar to species of finches on the main land.
He concluded with that- the finches arrived from the mainland and evolved to adapt to the environment and created a new species.
what 4 observations did darwin make along with his theory
1- offspring look similar to parents
2-No two individuals are identical
3-Organisms can produce large numbers of offspring
4-Populations in nature tend to remain fairly stable in size
Darwin said, The production of offspring, is the reason for species being better adapted to their environment.
This is because all offspring is different, some offspring are better adapted to the environment meaning they obtain enough food to survive and reproduce.
There characteristics are passed onto the next generation, making them better suited to the environment
What is the order of men who developed the theory of natural selection and evolution
Jean- Baptiste Lamarck
Charles Darwin
Alfred Wallace
What was Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s theory of evolution
He said: Changes in organism acquires during its lifetime, the changes are then passed down to the offspring
What was Darwins conclusions
There is a struggle to survive for organisms
Better adapted individuals survive and pass their characteristics to offspring
number of changes may give a rise to a new species
