evidence of evolution Flashcards
what are some pieces of evidence that life has exisdted billions of years and changed over time
- fossil evidence
- transitional forms
- homologous structures
- geography
- embryology
what does fossil evidence show
where one thing evolved from another
what does transitional forms show
the intermediate stages between and ancestral form and its descendants
what do homologies show
related organisms sgare similarities derived from common ancestors called homologies
what does geographic distibution show
evidence of platetectonics and supercontinents. if fossils of this organism is found both on the coast of her and here, then they probably once were connected
what does embryology show
similarities in developing embryos look alot alike
types of fossils
- petrified
- molds/casts…
- bones
- amber/ice/rock
whats a vestigial organ
a structure that has no function in the living organism (like and appendix, or tailbones…)
what are homologous parts
same structure and anatomy in different species, but different functions
homologous parts example
forelimbs of animals (same bones but one is for swimming, walking, flying…)
what are analogous parts
same function structures but with different anatomy.
example of analogous parts
- dolphins, fish, penguins have fins for swimming
- insects, birds, bats, have wings for flying
but they look nothing alike
what is comparative biochemistry
studies of organisms on a biochemical level (proteins and DNA)
