Darwin Flashcards
the name of his ship
HMS Beagle
where did he make his most important findings
galapagos islands
name of his book
“the origin of species “
parts of his theory
- variations exist in a population and are inherited
- there is a tendency for overproduction
- species compete for limited resources
- each individuall has advantages and disadvantages
- individuals better suited to environment will survive
- species change over time-some disappera and some new species
- descent with modification
- common descent
darwin’s 8 observations:
1- natural variation- a species has variation
2- species tend to overproduce
3- struggle for existence- b/c of over[rpduction, the pop has to compete to stay alive
4-organisms have adaptations
5- survival of the fittest- individuals with better adaptations survive and pass on their genes
6-species change over time-new species arive and some disappear
7-descent with modification-species alive today descended with modification from ancestors
8-common descent- all orgainsms on earth are united into common descent
