Evidence Based Practice Flashcards
Evidence Based Practice
Clinical Expertise, Best research evidence, patient values & preferences
Utilizing research to inform our practice
Critical thinking and EBP
Questions are vital and well formulated
Relevant information gathered and assessed
Conclusions are well reasoned and tested
Thinking about things holistically- more than one perception
Effective communication to figure out solutions to complex probs
Self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-correcting thinking
Levels of Thought
Low order thinking: unreflective, intuition based, self serving
High order thinking: selectively reflective, lacks critical thinking, inconsistently fair
Highest order thinking: explicitly reflective, utilizes critical thinking tools, consistently fair, assumes ethics
Critical thinking continuum
Lower order -> highest order
knowledge - lowest comprehension application analysis synthesis evaluation - highest
Steps in EBP
Step 1: Identify practical need for info , alter into questions that are answerable with research
Step 2: Locate evidence to address/answer question
Step 3: Appraise the evidence with critical thinking skills
Step 4: Apply the evidence to practice and policy decisions
Step 5: Evaluate the process
Ethical Standards for Practice/ Research: National Research Act
National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research: identifies basic ethical framework/guidelines for conducting research
- Respect for persons: informed consent, special protections for children, mental disabilities, prisoners
- Beneficence: maximize possible benefits to individuals
- Justice: Research must be potentially beneficial to individuals studied
- International Review Boards: ensure standards upheld (sw obligation to offer support services for individuals in research studies
Perspectives in Social Work Research
Postpositivist - Critical realism, objectivity, biased perspectives limit our ability to see reality, quantitative
Interpretative- multiple perspective through which to understand the social world, emphasis on examining cultural context, Ethnographic study/field observations, qualitative
Mixed methods: quantitative and qualitative study designs, strong inferences through application of both.
