what are the 5A’s ?
Ask, Align/Aquire, Appraise, Apply
what is ASK?
how to ask clinical questions in a focused way so that you can find the evidence and appraise the evidence
what is ALIGN/ACQUIRE?
search for and retrieve evidence, know where to go for good evidence, be sure that you get all of it, and you understand the strengths and weaknesses of different sources
what is APPRAISE?
critically appraise the evidence for validity and clinical relevance, is it good evidence? is it important from a clinical point of view?
what is APPLY?
does it apply to my patients?
what is REFLECTION?
can i do things differently next time?
what is evidence?
the available body of facts or information to show whether a belief or statement is true or valid
what do you have to think when looking for evidence?
where would you go to find evidence? what have you got to back it up? how reliable is it? if someone else tried to find this out would they get the same answer? are all answers similar?
professionally, why should you bother researching?
it is part of your professional role and a requirement of your regulatory body (GDC)
personally, why should you bother researching?
you should be informed on how to spot a scar story/fad/pseudo-science to avoid you (or your loved one) being ripped off, duped, wrongly treated, sub-optimally treated, exposed to harmful practices
what is peer-reveiw?
when a researcher finishes their work it is look over by other scientists
what do peer reviewers do?
comment on the validity of the study, judge important and originality, decide whether the paper should be published, improved or rejected
what are the issues with peer review?
corruption, cant prevent fraud, plagiarism or duplication, quality of the review process, skills of the reviewer, time consuming
what makes bad research?
not needed, no more research required, poor design, poorly reported, not reported
