What is archaeological evidence? Provide examples:
What does this help us to understand?
Material remains from the past.
Buildings, monuments, temples and artifacts
Can tell us about the society; whether or not they had a government, if/who they worshipped, important figures of their time and how things were designed/decorated
What is numismatic evidence? Provide examples: what does this hope us to understand?
Study of coins (can be archaeological and literary)
Coins
The inscription on a coin can tell us important dates, figures, legends, leaders and beliefs
What is literary evidence? Provide examples: what does this help us to understand?
Writings
Poetry, plays, books, speeches
Personalities, society and events of the ancient world
What is epigraphic evidence? Provide examples: what does this help us to understand?
Inscriptions and carvings
Inscriptions appear on; monuments, statues, buildings, tablets
Tells us what the enlarged object was, who it was for and/or why it was significant to that time period
Give four types of evidence used by historians to understand the past:
