Everyday Life - Lecture 2 Flashcards

Q
Adorno
A
- Leisure time is completely mechanised
- Games / Movies are designed in a way to guide us through an experience.
- They tell us when to feel fear, when to laugh, when to jump.
- There is no spontanteity or creativity.
2
Q
Chardin
A
- Painted “A Lady Taking Tea”
- This represents a shift in art, which previously focused on large monumental occassions. Now they are focusing on this idea of “everyday life”
- Previously, work and social life were inter-related. Now there is a disconnect. Marx in “Estranged Labour” wrote “that labour is external to the worker” and not in their inner nature.
- This leads to the idea that leisure time is when we can be ourselves

Q
Fefebvre
A
- “Everyday life is chock-o-block and completely empty”
- The world is full of products and gadgets but they all lack any creativity or personality.
- For example, movies. Although they provide an entertaining pass-time to cure boredom, it always feels like it lacks something.. perhaps the opportunity to have our creative input.
