A
- fought between British/China
- Part of the century of humiliation
- British sought to create foothold in Chinese territory by importing opium - draining China of its silver currency
- China forced to create multiple trade ports where Britain could trade freely (Hong Kong)

A
- Chinese citizens greatly disappointed by the results of the Treaty of Versailles
- Treaty allowed Japan to gain Chinese territory that was controlled by the German’s in WW1

Northern Expedition
A
- GMD and CCP alliance to take out the warlords of Northern China (unite China, allow government to regain control over the country)
- once the warlords defeated, GMD turn on the CCP marking the bginning of the Chinese Civil War

- retreat in response to campaigns by the KMT to root out the CCP
- depicted as a mythical event
- CCP lost 90% of its members
- China ruled by Long March survivors into the 1990s
- CCP would eventually push KMT to Taiwan

- Mao turns back on the movement and starts the anti-rightist purges

- Massive amount of deaths due to starvation, famine, flooding and killing through forced labor
- Mao severely criticized for policy which forced him to turn to the cultural revolution to consolidate power
- allowed for players such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng to rise to power

- Mao’s vision of creating a new revolutionary generation in order to continue to the tradition of revolutionaries
- Mass purges to anyone who Mao considered to be a threat - included Deng and Shaoqi
- Mao formed the red guard which turned China into chaos
