Notre Dame Cathedral
Gothic, big windows, flying buttresses. Construction began 1163. Original cathedral demolished by Maurice de Sully in 1160.
Hundred Years’ War
1337-1453. England v Valois Capetians. Two factors lay at heart of conflict: 1. England wanted independent possession of the duchy of Guyenne (or Acquitane), which was a fief of the French crown. 2. Succession- the kings of England were the closest relatives of the last Capetian King, Charles IV.

Parts rebuilt by Abbot Suger in 12th century- first gothic building

Consecrated in 1248, commissioned by Louis IX, housed crown of thorns.

Plague
A third of the population, ~70,000 died. Recorded by Jean de Venette. Stopped 1349.
The Cemetery of the Holy Innocents
Cemetery between 12th and 18th centuries. Demolished for health reasons in 1786. Decorated with the danse macabre, completed 1425.
Hotel Dieu
Est. 652 AD. Capacity 100-400, but according to Ziegler coped with 1,000-1,500.

8 yrs 1340-1348- 78 bequests.
8 months 1348-1349- 419 bequests.
Jews and the plague
2,000 Jews murdered in Strasbourg. Blamed for poisoning wells etc. not as susceptible to plague because of better hygiene and diet.

King John of France forced to sign this to keep his title
Treaty of Calais, 1360. Granted complete independence to duchy of Guyenne, almost a third of France.
