What are event structures and formats?
Knockouts, round robins, pools, carnivals, handicapping, seeding, expeditions and tabloids
What is a knockout competition?
The winner progresses in the competition and the loser is eliminated e.g. soccer tournament
An advantages is that it is cheaper
A disadvantages is that it can have negative effects on cognitive and physical health
What is a round robin competition?
A team/individual playing all other teams/individuals in the competition e.g. basketball comp
An advantages is that it is a simple concept
A disadvantages is that it if an event gets cancelled, it is difficult to make it fair
What is a pool competition?
Teams/individuals are seeded and placed in groups of equal teams in which they play everyone and the top teams/individuals progress to a knockout stage e.g. tennis tournaments
An advantages is that it promotes maximum involvement
A disadvantages is that it can cause exhaustion or fatigue
What is a traditional carnival competition?
Students may enter as many or as few events as they wish e.g. Swimming carnival
An advantages is that there is emphasis on enjoyment
A disadvantages is that it doesn’t promote participation
What is a novelty carnival competition?
Same as a traditional carnival but the events are replaced with novelty events e.g. beach carnival
An advantage is that participants are actively involved
A disadvantage is that it won’t have a representative pathway
What is a tabloid carnival?
Students are placed in groups and rotate around a number of events e.g. stations with different skills to learn cricket
An advantage is that it caters for all ability levels
A disadvantage is time constraints
How do you decide what type of carnival to do?
The age of the athletes
How many athletes there are
The ability level of the athletes
What is handicapping?
The practise of assigning an advantage either through scoring compensation or another advantage e.g. sailing
An advantage is to give all teams/individuals an equal chance of winning
A disadvantage is that it takes away from how certain teams/individuals have worked hard to be better
What is seeding?
Ordering the teams from best to worst based on statistics e.g. rugby union world cup
An advantage is that the top teams/individuals don’t eliminate each other in the first rounds.
A disadvantage is that it requires more organisation
What are expeditions?
An activity in the outdoors typically with guides e.g. safaris
An advantage is that it it gives people something to do out of the ordinary
A disadvantage is that there are risks involved
What are tabloids?
An event in which individuals are grouped and rotated through a number of activities e.g. a pe lesson
An advantage is that they cater for large groups of people
A disadvantage is that it needs a lot of equipment
What are some enterprises, organisational skills, and roles in event management?
Team unity, provide support, effective communication, promotion and flexibility and innovation.
What is team unity?
When a team works together towards a collective goal e.g. a running relay team has a common goal of getting a gold medal in the Olympics
What is providing support?
Giving people help, assistance and motivation e.g. supporting someone who is being hard on themselves
