Evaulation Flashcards
What is a strength of the Psychodynamic approach?
It takes into account both sides of the nature and nurture debate through the belief in the tripartite personality (nature) and the effects of childhood experiences on development (nurture)
What are 3 weaknesses of the Psychodynamic approach?
Its a reductionist and oversimplified approach
Its determinst
It can’t be proven wrong
Explain why the Psychodynamic approach is determinst?
Freud saw children as driven by their libido and adults’ behaviour as determined by their childhood experiences , this is determinist as Freud claims that we are never in full control of our behaviour and are always driven by other forces
Explain why the Psychodynamic approach is reductionist?
Its reductionist as it simplifies something as complex as personality down to 3 parts (id, ego, superego) and ignores factors such as a patient’s biochemistry and genetics -(e.g) would blame autism on absent mothers
Explain why the Psychodynamic approach not being able to be tested a significant weakness?
As the approach makes claims about things such as the unconscious mind and repression , both areas cannot be seen , therfore cant be proven wrong , which is very negative as no proof for the approach can be seen
