Assumptions Flashcards
What are the 3 assumptions of the psychodynamic approach?
Influence of childhood experiences
The unconcious mind
The Tripartite personality
What are the 5 psychosexual stages of development (in order)?
Oral (0-18 months)
Anal (18 months - 3 years)
Phallic (3-5 year)
Latency (5 years - puberty)
Genital (puberty onwards)
Explain the influence of childhood experiences on a childs development?
Freud claims that experiences during the psychosexual stages may cause them to be fixated (frustration and overindulgence) and that will cause problems depending on what stage the fixation is at
What are the 3 parts of the tripartite personality?
Id
Ego
Superego
Explain the tripartite personality
Freud believes that the adult personality is structured into 3 parts
Id- our primal side, impulsivity and the side of our brain which is out to gain pleasure and gratification
Ego - the mediator , gratifies the id in a socialy acceptable way
Superego- forms at the age of 4 , seeks to perfect and civilise our behaviour and our right and wrong (moral compass)
Explain the assumption of the unconscious mind
Freud proposed that the mind is like an iceberg, with a lot of what goes on in our minds happening in our preconscious and unconscious mind , meaning that a lot of function is unseen
What is the Id?
With us from birth, it is the primal urges of the human being, its implusive and requires immediate satisfaction. It is our drive for pleasure and our need to survive
What is the ego?
Developing at the age of 2, It is effectively the ‘middle man’ between the Id and the superego, it fuffils the desires of the Id in a way acceptable to the superego
What is the superego?
Developing at the age of 4, the superego is esentialy our moral compass and seeks to constantly perfect our behaviour
