Evaporation And Condensation Flashcards
How does evaporation cause cooling?
Evaporation takes place because the most energetic liquid molecules escape from the liquids surface and enter that air. Therefore, the average kinetic energy of the remaining molecule is less so the temperature of the liquid decreases. This means that evaporation cause cooling.
How is the rate of evaporation increased?
The rate of evaporation is increased by:
- increasing the surface area of the liquid
- increasing the temperature of the liquid
- creating a draught of air across the liquids surface
What effect would decreasing the surface area of a liquid have on its rate of evaporation?
Decreasing the surface area of a liquid would decrease the rate of evaporation
What is condensation?
Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid.
Where does condensation often take place?
Condensation often takes place on cold surfaces such as windows and mirrors
How is the rate of condensation increased?
The rate of condensation is increased by:
- increasing the surface area
- reducing the surface temperature
What effect would decreasing the surface area of a liquid have on its rate of condensation?
Decreasing the surface area would decrease the rate of condensation.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas
