Q

Controlled study

A

S - Watson and rayner went to great lengths to ensure there was a high level of control
E- for example, the study took part in a controlled environment (well lit dark room) meaning that extraneous variables could be controlled for.
E-this suggest that any unwanted factors won’t negatively affect the data collected.
C- however, this is not representative with real life situations therefore making it harder to apply the findings outside of the controlled environment and be replicated.
W- this is therefore a strength because we can be certain of an accurate conclusion on effect of conditioning on emotions

Q

Sample

A

S- one weakness of Watson and Rayners study is that there’s issues with the sample which result in conclusions being drawn from one case
E- for example little Albert is describe as a calm, even tempered baby but had he been emotionally unstable, the conditioned response may have lasted
E- this suggests that without any comparison it’s difficult to know whether the observed responses are unique to individuals or not
W- therefore this is a weakness because the small sample size makes it less likely to be generalisable to a larger population and draws inaccurate conclusions
