Cognitive Approach Assumptions Flashcards
Assumption 1: computer analogy
The human ind works similarly to a computer.
Our senses work as an input, information is then stored and retrieved when needed (input, process then outputted)
Atkinson and shiffrin made the multi stored model of memory.
The three stores of memory (computer analogy)
1- sensory memory (eyes and hear)- input
2- short term memory (stored)-output
3- long term memory output
Assumption 2: internal mental processes
Humans use cognitive processes to make sense of the world
We use senses to collect info then we use internal mental processes to interpret it
E.g. memory, language attention decision making and perception.
Griffiths asked pts to use introspection when playing on a fruit machine. He was interested in the processes gamblers and non gamblers make.
Regular gamblers made more irrational verbalisations
Assumption 3: schemas
Schemas act like a mental shortcut and act like organised packs of info stored in our memory.
They expand when we experience new things
Schemas are built through experiences and interactions with the world around us
Dion et al found that individuals who were judged to be physically attractive were also judge to be more competent romantic partners.
The schema assumption is that we enter romantic relationships with people we find attractive as we believe they have positive characteristics
Application of cognitive approach to relationships
The way we view ourselves (self schemas) has a bearing on our romantic relationships
The matching hypothesis suggests we look to pursue relationships with individuals of similar level of attractiveness
Therefore we are confident that our attractiveness will start relationships with other attractive people
