Evaluation for KC1 Flashcards
Research
Based on studies carried out with high levels of control in labs. This means that they are highly scientific and variables are controlled so they have high internal validity.
Applications
Classical conditioning is the basis of a therapy used to treat some psychological disorders, including gambling addiction. In aversion therapy, an addicted gambler is given a painful electric shock (UCS) when they read gambling-related phrases on cards (NS). The shock produces an unconditioned response (UCR) of discomfort/anxiety. After several pairings, the NS becomes a CS and produces the same discomfort (now a CR). This shows that classical conditioning has useful applications that can reduce psychological suffering and improve quality of life.
Weaknesses
Not so good at explaining complex behaviours. Classical conditioning ignores the impact of other factors on behaviour by simplifying it too much. Lots of research has highlighted the importance of biological and cognitive factors.
