Evaluation Criteria: Knees and Patella Flashcards
What are two reasons why we take knee images?
- Loose bodies in joint space “Joint mice”
- Trauma
What should we see on axial tunnel methods (AP and PA?)
- Open intercondylar fossa
- Posterioinferior surface of condyles
- Plateaus should be in profile
- Visible intercondylar eminence
- No rotation
Where does the patella develop?
Develops in the tendon of the quadriceps femoris
Where does the fabella develop?
Develops in the tendon of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius
What should you see in an AP or PA patella projection?
- Patella completely superimposed by femur
- No rotation
- Marker in correct orientation
What should you see in Tangential Patella –Inferosuperior Projections?
- Patella in profile
- Inferior and superior borders superimposed
- Open patellofemoral joint
- Anterior surfaces of femoral condyles
What is the best projection for visualizing vertical fractures of the patella?
Tangential Patella –Inferosuperior Projections
How do you position a settagast prone?
Prone
Knee flexed 90°
CR: 15-20° from long axis of lower leg
Do not attempt if there is a knee injury
How do you position a settagast sitting?
Patient sitting near end of table
Knee flexed 90°
Use thyroid, thorax, and gonadal shielding
CR: 15-20° from long axis of lower leg
Do not attempt if knee injury
