Evaluating Types Of LTM Flashcards
Distinguishing procedural and declarative memories:
HM - Corkin (2002)
After surgery, HM could still form new procedural memories but not episodic or semantic. He could draw something from looking at its reflection (procedural) but had no recollection of doing it (episodic/semantic)
Distinguishing episodic and semantic memories:
Hodges and Patterson (2007)
Episodic memories may be a gateway to semantic memories. They studied patients with Alzheimer’s and found that they had the ability to form new episodic memories but not semantic showing a separation between the 2
Evidence from brains damaged patients:
most research is conducted on living patients but it’s difficult to be certain which part of the brain is affected until the patient dies. Damage to a part of the brain doesn’t mean it’s responsible for particular behaviours but instead acting as a relay station
