> September 1939 every household was registered and given an identity card and ration booklet
> coupons from booklet had to be exchanged to shopkeepers with every transaction

Describe evacuation.
> began as soon as war was declared
> was never enforced by the government but was highly encouraged
> Women and children were evacuated for morale reasons- if they died would lower morale
> evacuation mostly from likely armed forces and industrial areas such as London and Birmingham to less likely countryside
> some left the country for Canada and America
How was evacuation unsuccessful?
> for some it was difficult to change and adapt to their new environment
experience depended on host family
How was evacuation successful?
> health improved for some, especially those who had lived in the slums in East London
- fresher air and better food
> many made friends and were excited by their new environment
