Eutrophication Flashcards

Q
Name 2 complex ions which pollute rivers and lakes
A
Nitrates (NO3 -)
Phosphates ( PO4 3-)
1
Q
What is eutrophication?
A
The deoxygenation of water caused by enrichment of water with nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates
2
Q
What happens in eutrophication? - 7 points
A
- Influx of nutrients into water ( fertilizers, untreated sewerage)
- Excessive growth of algae (algal bloom)
- Acts as a blanket, blocks light from plants in water, less photosynthesis
- Short life span, algae die.
- Population explosion of bacteria
- Bacteria decompose the dead algae, high rate of respiration, use up the dissolved oxygen in the water
- Water becomes deoxygenated and fish die

Q
At what stage of the treatment of sewerage are nitrates and phosphates removed?
A
Tertiary stage
