Euthyphro Dilemma Flashcards
1
Q
Background story
A
Euthyphro & Socrates meet at the courthouse. Euthyphro is bringing murder charges against his dad. Socrates asks where “right” comes from, and Euthyphro says it’s from the gods.
2
Q
Dilemma Statement
A
Is something good because God says it is? Or does He say it is because it’s good?
3
Q
Why it’s a problem for theists:
A
Makes morality arbitrary (God could say murder is good). Morality is independent of God (we don’t need Him after all).
4
Q
Christian Answer
A
Neither — false dilemma. God’s nature/essence IS the standard by which we define and measure goodness. The Trinity is what defines goodness.
