C.S. Lewis on Relativism Flashcards
Quarreling is evidence of objective moral law?
Arguing is showing someone is in the wrong (“calling a foul”); presupposes an objective standard
”Herd Instinct” Objection
Morality is simply the human instinct to help/cooperate with others. Groups who did that were more likely to survive. (Genetic fallacy!!)
Answer to “Herd Instinct” Objection
Thing that judges between competing instincts (ex. help other vs save myself) cannot be either instinct; it often tells us to choose the weaker instinct/desire.
”Social Convention” Objection
Morality is just cultural preferences bred into us by out parents/education/society.
Answer to ”Social Convention” Objection
Just because we have to be taught something doesn’t mean it’s a human invention (ex. math). Also, moral progress would be impossible.
Lewis’ Musical Analogy
No “right” or “wrong” nots on a piano — sheet music tells us when each note should be played
