Missionary
People who worked to convert others to their religion by going to foreign countries. Missionaries consisted of the Spanish-Catholic friars. They ordered Indians to build new churches and adopt the rituals of the Catholic faith
Presidio
Forts built by the Spanish soldiers in colonial America in the Southwest and California part of the U.S. today
Mestizo
People in Spanish America who were of European and Native American descent.
Pope’s Rebellion
A shaman named Popé led the rebellion. The Pueblo Indians were fed up after disease, famine, and violence which made it difficult for the Pueblos to pay tribute in labor and crops to the missionaries. Popé encouraged resistance to Spanish ways and urged the return of traditional Pueblo culture and religion. The Pueblos were supported by the Apaches. The Natives destroyed missions, farms, and ranches. The rebellion was the greatest setback Indians had on colonial expansion
Frontiers of Inclusion
Racial intermixing between the French and Native American. The French would work with Native Americans to get what they needed they were also helping the Native Americans get what they needed. The French saw Native Americans as partners and formed alliances
Frontiers of Exclusion
The Spanish enslaved Indians and did not try to work together. They took Native lands.
Samuel de Champlain
Quebec’s founder who traded with the Montagnais, Algonquin, and Huron Indians in return he protected them from their enemies, the Iroquois. Champlain and nine of his soldiers helped the Indians attack the Iroquois beside a lake which is later named Champlain.
Coureurs de bois
“Runner of the woods” French colonist who lived in the woods as fur traders.
Metis
Many fur traders married Indians the children were called metis
Joint Stock Companies
A company run by a group of investors who share the company’s profits and losses.
Royal Colony
English colony that was under direct control of the crown
Proprietary Colony
English colony granted by the king to an individual or group
Virginia Company
A corporation of great merchants based in London. Transported 10,000 people to the colony, 20% made it alive. The company offered free land to Immigrants who came to Virginia
Jamestown (Southern colony)
The first are successfully founded by the English, became part of the colony of Virginia.
Pocahontas
Powhatan’s favorite daughter who was captured by the English in 1613. She converted to Christianity and married a colonist named John Rolfe.
House of Burgesses
Representative assembly of colonial Virginia formed in 1619. Male landowners could elect two leaders to represent their settlement in colonial government.
