What is mercantilism?
An economic theory that a country can become rich by importing raw materials from and exporting manufactured goods to colonies
What is the northwest passage?
A sea lane through the arctic that would link the Atlantic and pacific oceans and provide a trade route to Asia
What is colonialism?
The practise of one country exercising political, economic, and cultural power over another region or people
What is a monopoly?
The exclusive right to trade or conduct business
Who are the Jesuits?
Catholic missionaries who worked in New France to convert First Nations to Christianity
Who were the coureurs de bois?
Young French explorers who lived and traded with First Nations
What is the treaty of Utrecht?
1713, ended the war of Spanish succession, and forced France to hand over large parts of New France to the British
What are middlemen?
First Nations who traded with inland First Nations for furs to then trade with Europeans
What are the articles of capitulation?
Terms by which New France surrendered to British forces in 1760
What were the filles du roi?
Means the kings daughters, women were paid to go to New France, marry the men, and populate the communities
What are some negative impacts of the fur trade for First Nations?
Europeans brought diseases, killed elders which caused lack of tradition. Loss of culture because they had less time to practise it, they brought alcohol which caused addiction and conflict
What is terra nullius?
Land belonging to no one, even though Europeans knew they were there, First Nations weren’t Christian so therefore they weren’t important and didn’t matter
Describe the treaty of Paris:
1763, ended the seven years war and ceded New France to the British. This spread British dominance and formed canada the way it is today
