The European Union has 3 main powers:

  • the power to legislate. This power is Shared with the Council of the European Union.
    In most decisions european laws are made by a codecision procedure. The parliament can make amendments to legislativen under this procedure.
  • the power of the purse. Is also shared with the Council. The P supervises spending by the EU and also adopts the annual budget for the EU.
