what are human rights?
used to refer to a collection of fundamental rights which all people are entitled to simply because they are a human being
what is the ECHR an initiative of?
the council of europe which is primarily concerned with enhancing social, political and cultural development through the protection of human rights
what does the ECHR do?
a legal text that outlines a wide range or rights to which individuals are entitled
what are absolute rights?
must be upheld in all circumstances. it will never be ok to violate or compromise an absolute right in any situation
what are limited rights?
identify the circumstances in which it can be limited
what are qualified rights?
can be restricted or taken away
what is the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)
the judicial institution of the ECHR, it is not an EU court
what are the two ways a matter can be taken to the ECtHR?
one country may bring a case against another
the individual petition procedure - enables individuals, companies or groups that claim to be victims of fundamental violations to bring claims before the court
