Eukaryotic vs Prokaryotic Cells/Cell Structure Flashcards
Describe the cell organelles of Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes
Prokaryotes: Lack membrane-bound organelles - have simpler structures like ribosomes.
Eukaryotes: Contain membrane bound organelles such as mitochondria, ER, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes etc.
Describe the nucleus and DNA arrangement of Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes
Nucleus:
- Prokaryotes: lack true nucleus - genetic material is present in the nucleoid and not enclosed by a membrane.
- Eukaryotes: Have a true nucleus enclosed by nuclear membrane, containing genetic material (DNA).
DNA arrangement:
- Prokaryotes: single, circular chromosome - may also contain plasmids (Plasmids are physically separate from chromosomal DNA and replicate independently).
- Eukaryotes: Multiple linear chromosomes found in the nucleus.
