Eukaryotic Microbes (fungus) Flashcards
1
Q
Aspergillus
A
-Common airborne allergen
Forms of Disease:
- ABPA
- Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis
*azole resistant
2
Q
Aspergillosis (genus)
A
- Life threatening to ummunocompromised
- infection via inhalation of spores (ball of fungus inside host)
Asymptomatic (early stages)
- ->dry cough
- ->coughing blood
- ->shortness of breath
3
Q
Candida
A
- Resident flora (microorganisms that occupy a particular body site)
- ->skin, mucous membrane
- ->commensal organism
4
Q
Candidiasis
A
Opportunistic infection- affects individuals w/ weakened immune system
Sites of infection:
- Oral “thrush”
- Vaginal “yeast infection”
- Invasive (systemic) - candidemia
- Babies “diaper rash”
5
Q
Phylum - Zygomycota
A
-coenocytic hyphae (one long cell - not divided into compartment)
- Bread molds
- –>starch & sugar digestion
- —–>cannot digest cellulose
Zygomycota infections of RARE
- -mucromycosis (molds live thru. environment)
- -oportunistic pathogen (affects weak immune systems)
6
Q
Phylum Basidomycota
A
- shrooms
- septate hyphae (walls between cells)
Pathogens:
-Cryptococcus neoformans
TOXIC
7
Q
Histoplasmosis
A
-DIMORPHIC FUNGUS (molds and yeast)
- histoplasmosis capsulatum - MOLD
- –>Derial hyphae - Hyphae produce macroconidia & microconidia; spores are aerosolized and dispersed
- Microconidia - inhaled to lungs by susceptible host
- Warm temp in host = budding yeast
- Yeast is phagocytized (living cells ingest other cells or particles) by immune cells and transported to lymph
- lymph nodes –> travel in blood to other parts of body
